Katrina May's Succesful Sista Profile:
Katrina May shares her success story and personal experiences as a black woman in business.
Did you always want to be a Business Woman?
I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit. I firmly beleive that your destiny is in your hands. The risk and rewards of business ownership humbles me and builds much character. I thank God for every opportunity to practice my faith over fear.
How would you describe your experience as a Black Entrepreneur?
I have had many different experiences on this path. I realized early that sometimes your own people will pre-judge you and cast stones because of the negative stereotypes of black businesses. On the other hand I have experienced that we can also be a raving fan to one another. My clients that are raving fans are such an asset to my growth and that has giving me an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Overall my experience has been positive and although there are things I would have done differently each encounter has shaped me.
Looking back on your business decisions, is there anything that you would have done differently?
I would have taken more time to plan and set realistic goals before making the "dive". Planning is essential to any business. It would have been ideal to have more funds available for working capital.
Did you have any formal business training? Do you think this is important to be successful?
I have a B.S. in Marketing & Distribution Management. I was attending college when I started my business, and three years into ownership when I graduated. Experience is the best teacher. My formal training has helped in some aspects but textbooks and case-studies can't compare to the blood, sweat, tears experience in the real world.
What funding sources have worked for you?
Presently I have not had to rely on any outside funding for day-to-day operations. Although, a funding cushion would have ease my mind in the beginning.
How has family/friend support financially or otherwise affected your business efforts?
My family support has been very monumental in my business efforts. My dad and son's and significant other gave me everthing for start-up. It's such a blessing to have a support system.
How do you work on making your business grow?
I read articles that are industry-specific for operations and management, but I prefer tried-and true general business tips for marketing. Also, I have what I call the "A" team. This includes my accountant, numbers don't lie..and she knows numbers. When I need a financial reality check she is it. My business coaches are awesome. I want advice from someone who's been there..done that, and doing this and doing it right! Another valuable member of my "A" team is my business software. There is nothing like report to give you key ratios to your business. The key is knowing what the ratios mean.
What words of wisdom can you share with other business women?
1. Remember the importance of God,Your family, and your health. You need all three factors
2. Keep your notebook on your nightstand. My greatest inspirations, ideas, etc. came to me in the middle of night. If your notebook is on your nightstand you can instantly write down your thoughts.
3. Pay attention to the numbers from the top and especially the bottom line. These are your vital signs.
